Preschool Easter Literacy Activity

We brought out our Abc See, Hear, Do book by Stefanie Hohl to practice letter sounds and phonemic awareness. We didn’t plan on putting our fine motor skills to work but we did by putting those stubborn Easter eggs together. This activity focuses on letter names, sounds and upper and lower case letter recognition. The colored rice is not necessary but it does add sensorial fun to it and you’ll be amazed to see all the different ways kids explore it.

What you’ll need:

  • Bin
  • Colored Rice (Optional)
  • 26 Plastic eggs
  • Sharpie
  • ABC See, Hear, Do Book (Optional, but totally recommend it!)

A focus for Zay right now is becoming more familiar with upper and lowercase letters. Sometimes, kids prefer one over the other and can more easily identify either upper or lower case letters.

DIY Kids colored rice

This simple, non-toxic, colored rice recipe will keep your little one engaged and exploring. Plus, the play possibilities are infinite!

  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 cup of rice
  • Food coloring
  • Spoon
  • Zip-loc bags
  • Wax Paper
  • Trays

  • Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar per cup of rice and add food coloring until you get the shade you desire.
  • Add the rice inside the Zip-loc bag, pour vinegar inside and a few drops of food coloring.
  • Zip the bag close, get your little helpers and have them shake the bag of rice until the color and vinegar is mixed together.
  • Get your tray ready, place a wax paper over it, and don’t forget your spoon.
  • Once the rice is evenly covered in the vinegar and food coloring transfer the rice into the tray and spread it out with the spoon.
  • It takes no more than an hour for the rice to be dry but it depends on the rice you use and the amount of vinegar you add.
  • Want your rice dry right away?
  • Place the tray in the oven on the lowest setting and check up on it after a few minutes, you can also set it on a table outside to dry with sun light.
