You’re probably also going crazy from hearing your kids whine and complain about how bored they are, but remember, boredom leads to creative fun! Today we are looking forward to the unknown and we can’t help but wonder what will the next few days, weeks, or even months hold for our families…

In order to remain healthy and slow the spread of COVID-19, you and your kids might find yourselves stuck at home. Schools are closed and like the rest of the world, you’re probably practicing social distancing, but life doesn’t stop, so now what?

At-home activity ideas for kids

The best at-home activities for kids are those that keep them busy with the supplies you already have on hand.

Welcome Spring with this Easter Literacy Activity for Preschoolers or practice Math with this DIY Easter Math Egg Cracking Activity. We also enjoy getting messy and creative by Painting with Berries and making Coffee Filter Flowers.

What activities can kids do on their own?

Free play is extremely important… for you and for your kids! Mama, you are going to need a lot of brakes so make time for your children to take part in unstructured play. All jokes aside, unstructured play allows children the freedom to explore, create, and discover without predetermined rules or guidelines.

If you want to avoid the “I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO!” and the “I AM SO BORED!” complaints, consider writing down ideas such as ‘blocks, balls, building, race cars, coloring, puzzles, reading, arts and crafts’ on individual pieces of paper and place them in a basket. When it’s time for free play, bring the basket out and have your kids draw an idea from the basket.

If your kids are old enough and do well playing independently, you can let them get messy on their own with arts and crafts. Set out glue, pompoms, googly eyes, felt pieces, craft sticks, pipe cleaners, and watch them create as their imagination goes wild!

What is a good schedule for children who are at home?

A kid’s schedule, no matter their age should include playtime, quiet time, free play, outdoor play, academic learning, exercise, eating, and cleaning. The beauty of being at home and becoming your child’s educator is that you are now in charge.

Below I included a printable PDF file of the schedule we try to follow with our 6 and 7-year-old boys so you can have an idea of what our day looks like. Feel free to use it as an example to create a flexible schedule that works best for you and your family.

Daily Schedule

What shows could my kids watch?

Screen time differs from household to household. In our household screen time is minimal and limited. Personally, I prefer the boys watching shows that foster both intellectual and emotional growth. On extra-long days, PBS Kids is extremely helpful and it’s a favorite in our household. The boys can’t get enough of Wild Kratts, Curious George, Molly of Denali, Sid the Science Kid, and Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum.

What apps can my kids use?

Just like screen time, apps differ from household to household. In our household technology is big, one of the boys learn best virtually, while the other one prefers hands-on. Whenever the boys use their tablets, the apps on there foster both intellectual and emotional growth.

One app we absolutely love and have been using for over three years is ABCmouse!

ABCmouse is a fun game centered software that allows kids from ages 2-8 to LEARN while they are PLAYING! Kids can learn at their own level and pace and you can also set up daily time limits.

Resetting the Mood

Whenever the boys get cranky we go outside! We go for a walk or a run, we explore around the neighborhood, and enjoy the fresh air until everyone is smiling!

Dance parties also help. Whenever the mood is getting cloudy, turn on some music and start dancing! Just dance like nobody’s watching! I promise your little ones will follow and dance the bad vibes away.
